Boy, 8, dives into record books
KUALA LUMPUR: He may be only 8 but Adam Faisal Azman has set a record in diving, which would be envied by adults.

Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Donald Lim presenting Adam Faisal Azman, 8, the youngest Master Scuba Ranger in Southeast Asia, with a certificate at the Malaysia International Dive Expo 2007 in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
The boy has completed 21 dives, making him the youngest diver in Southeast Asia to earn the Master Scuba Ranger title.
The honour is given to children aged between 8 and 12 who have made 21 dives.
Adam’s accomplishment is not only confined to under water but on land as well.
An outdoor person who likes skateboarding, he has scaled Gunung Ledang twice.
"I like to dive as I love exploring marine life, watching turtles, fishes and corals," said Adam, a member of the Kids Scuba Centre.
Centre director and dive instructor Syed Abd Rahman Syed Hassan said he considered Adam "truly exceptional".
"I have trained hundreds of children but he stands out from the rest. He can outdo people much older than him."
Adam was among 20 children, aged from 8 to 12, who read out the Kids Scuba pledge during the opening of the second Malaysia International Dive Expo (MIDE) 2007 at Putra World Trade Centre yesterday.
Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Donald Lim, who opened the three-day event, said with more than 126 diving sites in the country, Malaysia should not have much problem attracting divers from all over the world.
"With cheap fares offered by airlines, many tourists are making their way here. The only setback is that locals don’t know how to take advantage of the influx."
Lim said a survey by the ministry showed that Malay-sians did not like diving and mountain-climbing but preferred to shop.
"More Malaysians should take up outdoor activities as we have many things to offer. In fact, Malaysia was recently voted Asia Pacific’s best eco-tourism destination," he said, adding that Sipadan island was named as one of the top five tourism destinations in the world.
About 100 local and international companies are taking part in the expo.
Among the activities lined up are scuba-diving demonstrations, an underwater mini-film documentary, lucky draws, colouring contest for children and seminars. |
